Did you know that Lake Trace bass are so smart that they can even read what's on your tee shirt?? One four plus pound largemouth answered the call Sunday morning to the left of the dam. It was 19.5 inches long and has been registered in our 2018 TUFF Derby Congrats to Dave!

Probably the Biggest Bass Ever Caught from Lake Trace! (Thirteen Pounds, Thirteen Ounces)

MAY DAYS! MAY DAYS!  LAKE TRACE BIG FISH ALERT!

It was a Memorial Day weekend to remember for Don Facciolo (MC) as he was rowing his jon boat around Lake Trace in late May, slow drifting a jig in deeper channel waters for spawning or post-spawn bass. The week before the full moon, he sent me an e-mail to report that he landed an eight pound, eight ounce bass - his biggest so far in 2018. (Last year Don won 1st Place Bass in our TUFF Derby with a 13.5# bass. If you look in last year's blog you will see that his two big bass were caught around the full moon in June)

Things, however, were looking even better for Don in May 2018 ....

On Saturday (May 26th) an almost 26 inch eleven pound, three ounce lunker was caught and released.  On Sunday, a hard fought battle with an almost 28 inch largemouth lost her fight due to Don's landing skills.  She was measured at 27.75 with a girth of 21.5 inches and released alive and well.  On the official TUFF fish weight calculator (length times length times girth divided by 1200 with tenths converted to ounces), that big female rounded up to 13 pounds, 13 ounces.

And that, folks, to the best of my knowledge is, I do believe, probably the biggest bass ever caught from Lake Trace!

The 2018 TUFF Derby (Youth Division) is heating up!

by Miss Libby

It was a different kind of Derby Day on May 5th when three-year-old Waylon Cox of South Landing reeled in this 13.25 inch, almost two pound crappie at the Harbor Creek boat ramp using a live minnow on a Spider Man rod/reel.  He’s currently in 1st Place Crappie in our yearly Derby which runs through November 15th. At our March 31st “Fish for Fun lesson at the CTCC dock, we were able to have three other children posted on the TUFF Scoreboard in 2nd Place Crappie and 1st and 2nd Place Catfish.  Go to www.carolinatuff.com to learn how to join the fun! Or call Libby Bibb in Hidden Lake at the Lake Hotline 919-499-1300.

Any Carolina Trace owner or renter, their family members or guests can enter to win a handsome engraved plaque (Adults) or beautiful Gold or Silver Fishing Medallions (Youth 16 & Under) in Bass, Crappie, Bream or Catfish Categories. You don't have to be a member of TUFF or the Club to participate. To register your catch, measure its length/girth, take a pic, and release your fish where you caught it.  If you don't have a cloth tape measure, cut a piece of your fishing line to measure the length and cut another piece of line to measure the girth (the fattest part around the middle). In the Youth Division, we just need the length in the Crappie, Bream or Catfish Categories.  For bass entries, also measuring the girth really helps us gather data about the fishery.  To register online, go to www.carolinatuff.com, click on Catches and click on New Catch Form (non-members). Call Libby at 919-499-1300 to get posted on the TUFF Scoreboard. Besides the coveted TUFF awards, you win bragging rights as a Lake Trace fishing expert!

Fourteen "Kid Casters" from the Lee County Boys & Girls Club enjoyed Morning Fishing at the CTCC Dock April 5th!

by Miss Libby

Posted on Fri Apr 27 2018

The weather was perfect as seven TUFF volunteers welcomed 14 youngsters (and Mr. D) to the CTCC dock for some fishing fun. The bite was pretty good with about two dozen small fish caught and released during this two hour event. White bass, white perch, bluegills, red ear sunfish and crappie were reeled in by this enthusiastic group. Each participant received the NC Sport Fish Identification Guide from the NCWRC.

Thanks, as always, to Escalante, the owners of CTCC, for hosting another Fish for Fun lesson at the dock as part of TUFF's ongoing Outreach Program to the Sanford community.

Click on Read More to see some of the catches and click on each picture to read the captions. Our LCB&G contact " T.C." said he hoped we will offer another event in August. I said "Maybe, if Mother Nature cooperates". Our "Back to School" event last year had a heat index of 111 degrees .... yikes!

Better Weather and More Fish Caught at our March 31st Fish for Fun Lesson!

by Miss Libby

Posted on Wed Apr 25 2018

Our 7th Annual TUFF Fish for Fun Lesson on March 31st showcased a warmer and less windy day, THANK GOODNESS!  We had seven Kid Casters, most from the Carolina Trace children which were on the Traditional School calendar, but also visiting grandchildren from a year-round program out of state that happened to have Spring Break the same time as Lee County.  Nine adults including TUFF volunteers brought our participant count up to 16

The Good News is that fish were biting and 20 fish were caught and released at the dock. Every Kid Caster caught something!  (We make sure of that!)

As usual, we have some tentative winners in our seasonal 2018 TUFF Youth Division Catfish and Crappie Categories. (The Tuff Derby runs until November 15th each year).  Click on Read More and you will see a caption if you click on each picture! Congrats to our KC kids!

Join the fun and register your child's catch this year! Our Youth Division (16 and under)  has Bass, Crappie, BREAM and Catfish Categories from Lake Trace and any pond in Trace (if you live in the POA who owns that pond).

Our next Spring Break event is April 5th with the Lee County Boys and Girls Club. If you would like to volunteer to teach kids at this event, just call Libby at 919-499-1300.
